Morphological characterization and ecotypic classification of olive varieties in Bordj Bou Arreridj, Algeria

The aim of this research is to establish the phenotypic variation
that exists in the olive varieties of Olea europaea L. in the Bordj Bou
Arreridj region of Algeria. The study examined 18 olive varieties from
20 farms, focusing on the morphological characterisation of fruits,
leaves, and endocarps using standard descriptors and precise measurement tools. Significant coefficients of variation were observed for
the traits studied, indicating substantial differences among the varieties. The highest variability was found in fruit weight, with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 48.60%, while leaf length demonstrated the
lowest CV at 9.77%. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) primarily
distinguished three different ecotypic groups based on fruit and endocarp size and shape parameters. The Bray-Curtis similarity analysis
revealed compositional similarities among some of the local variants,
providing insights into their potential genetic relationships. Notably,
the study reports the presence of the rare Leucocarpa variety, which
had not been previously documented in Algeria. This discovery highlights the importance of thorough regional surveys in uncovering hidden biodiversity. The findings reveal a rich agro-morphological genetic variation in olive ecotypes in the region, which is valuable for
genetic conservation efforts and breeding research. This diversity
could potentially be exploited to develop cultivars with improved
traits such as disease resistance, oil quality, or adaptation to specific
environmental conditions.
Our classification enables targeted breeding, prioritized conservation, and optimized cultivation practices, supporting the development
of resilient, locally-adapted varieties and the preservation of valuable
genetic resources in the region's olive industry.

Characterization and Diversity Analysis of Olive (Olea europaea L.) Varieties in Bordj Bou Arreridj, Algeria: Insights into Ecotypic Grouping and Agro-environmental Adaptation

This study explores the phenotypic diversity of 18 olive (Olea europaea L.) varieties in Bordj Bou Arreridj,
Algeria. Utilizing principal component analysis (PCA) and Bray-Curtis similarity analysis, we identified three
distinct ecotypic groups explaining 64.92% of total variability. Group 1 includes varieties like Ronde de
Miliana and Adjeraze, characterized by large fruits and kernels. Group 2, featuring Sigoise and Sevillana,
has elongated fruits and kernels. Group 3, including Chemlal and Arbequina, comprises varieties with small
fruits, kernels, and leaves. This phenotypic grouping suggests significant adaptation to various agroenvironmental conditions.
Through similarity analysis, we discovered close genetic relationships between certain varieties (e.g.,
Adjeraze and Aberkane) and marked distinctions among others (e.g., Chemlal and Sevillana). The study
also identified previously unknown varieties, enhancing the catalog of 15 local and three introduced
varieties. These findings provide valuable insights for varietal selection and breeding programs tailored to
diverse growing conditions.

FLORISTIC CONDITIONS IN THE STEPPIC ZONE

The Steppic zones are strong milieus with low and irregular rainfall, and Steppic vegetation
and soil. However, there are always conditions that are favorable for the existence of a spontaneous
flora in the edapho-climatic and anthropic stresses. This study aims at making a preliminary evaluation
of the floristic conditions (biological types and floristic wealth) in the Steppic zone of the region of
M’cif. The sampling was carried out using the minimal area method that requires collecting all the
vegetal species in a limited surface. The sampling shows only steppic species that adapt to the milieu.
It includes edaphic ecological groups that embody the action of the edaphic actors on the floristic,
psammophile, and halophile composition of the vegetal communities. Among the most remarkable
species in this zone, we find Retama retam, Atriplex halimus, and Salsola vermiculata. This vegetation
is a witness of the belonging to an anthropized zone (agro-pastoral zone)

Morphological Behavior of the Leaves, the Fruits and the Trees of 03 Natural Atlas Pistachio Populations (Pistacia Atlantica Desf.) Collected in the Algerian Arid Region

Introduction: The Atlas pistachio (Pistacia atlantica) is
a robust tree endemic to North Africa with a welldefined trunk and deciduous leaves. It contributes to soil
conservation and plays a vital role in reforestation
programs in arid and semi-arid areas.
Methods: This study focused on three populations of the
Atlas pistachio tree located in different stations in the
arid region of Algeria, namely: Sidi M'Hamed (M'sila),
Messaad (Djelfa), and Ras El Miaad (Biskra). It was
conducted to determine the morphological behavior of
the species in arid bioclimatic regions, taking into
consideration the effect of the soil physicochemical
characteristics. In this regard, eleven traits of the trees,
the leaves and the fruits were measured.
Results: The statistical analysis of the soil
physicochemical parameters concluded that the soils of
the studied areas have a medium texture and moderately
a basic pH, and are low to moderately limestone, slightly
saline, and relatively rich with the organic matter.
Regarding the morphological variability, groups of
stations were discriminated based on the different
variables studied. The principal component analysis
(PCA) revealed a correlation between the dimensions of
the trees and the leaves with the soil properties and the
climatic factors. It allowed dividing the three stations
into three groups. The variables of total tree height, tree
circumference, crown height, organic matter, soil
moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity, total
limestone content, and altitude discriminate the station
SM (group 1). The variables fruit length, leaf area, leaf
width, and leaf length discriminate the station MS
(group 2). The station RM represents group 3 and is
characterized with the variables of trunk height and fruit
width.

Soil Conservation

The soil degradation results in the erosion and loss of the fertility. Today, it has many types, which impoverish the ecosystems and endanger the life quality. Thus, the fight against it is necessary. The main objective of this course exceeds the mere description of the phenomenon, as we aim at collecting all the information about its factors and mechanisms to find solutions that limit the erosion risk and preserve the water quality. This course is meant for the 3rd year Bachelor students majoring in “soil and water”.

ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY FOR IRRIGATION USE IN THE M'SILA REGION (ALGERIA)

In this study, the physical and chemical characteristics of groundwater quality parameters of 16 wells within the M’Sila region were used for calculations such as sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), Kelly’s ratio (KR), sodium percentage (Na %), permeability index (PI) and magnesium hazard (MH), which are used in irrigation water quality ratings. Also, the irrigation water quality index (IWQI) was calculated for all ground water sources within the study area. The correlations between the irrigation water quality parameters were determined using Pearson correlation analysis. The SAR, KR, and NA % values in the study area show that the groundwater in the study area is excellent and good as such suitable for irrigation purposes. Evaluation of the suitability of the groundwater in the study area for irrigation based on MH and WQI also suggests that 31.25 % and 37.5 % respectively of the samples are suitable and excellent or good for irrigation. The PI values show that the ground waterfalls under Class III, making the groundwater ‘unsuitable’ for irrigation. The groundwater in the study area is acceptable for irrigation except for a few instances which require a special careful application

The socioeconomic aspect of desertification in the Southern region of the Wilaya of M’sila,Algéria

The degradation of the socioeconomic factors is one àf the effects of desertification. It manifests in the destruction of the production bases, the decline of the social system, and the decrease of the population. Like the other Algerian Steppic Wilayas, Msila faces an alarming desertification that leads to the degradation of the natural resources and the modification of the land use. The South of Msila (the study region is part of it) became a land for the vegetal production relying on the deep groundwater. However, the unsuitable development methods changed the region and contributed to the desertification and the secondary salination issues. In this context, due to the lack of the researches in this field, it is necessary to evaluate the socioeconomic aspects of the desertification effects. The analysis includes measuring the effects of degradation on the life conditions. To do so, a deep documentary research was conducted on the study region based on the literature review. The study includes a series of surveys on 259 informants in 04 sites. Findings show a bad situation due to the decrease of the agricultural outcomes.

THE STATE OF AWARENESS ABOUT THE PHENOMENON OF DESERTIFICATION BY THE INHABITANTS OF THE REGION OF KHOUBANA, M’SILA, ALGERIA

Desertification is one of the main dangers that menace the arid and semi-arid regions. It is considered as one of the most important environmental problems of the 21st century. It is the result of a combination of direct and indirect factors; some of which are linked to the climate and anthropic activities. In fact, out of 238 million acres, 200 millions are located in Saharan zones, 20 million acres are in steppic zones (including the study region) with very fragile soil that is subject to the process of desertification, and almost 18 million acres are mountains, plains, and prays. This study is conducted to know the degree of the awareness of the inhabitants of the region of Khoubana regarding this serious phenomenon. It is a series of surveys with 151 informants, who had been chosen at random in Khoubana, M’cif, and El Houamed. Our findings show that the informants contributed positively to the surveys thanks to the importance of the topic. Key words: Algeria, Khoubana, desertification, inhabitants

Impact of Human Factor on the Desertification Process in the M'Cif Region, Msila, Algeria

This research revolves around the anthropic factors and their role in the expansion of desertification in the region M'cif in the state of Msila (Algeria) because this problem is one of the most dangerous environmental phenomena in arid and semi-arid areas. Thus, the study area is located in a dry climate and is subject to the emergence of desertification on its lands. The study aims at identifying the anthropic factors that impact the emergence and aggravation of the problem of desertification, including population density, the power of the legal regime, grazing, and irrigation methods that leave vast tracts of agricultural land unproductive.

Study Of The Evolution Of Land Use In The M'cif Region, Msila, Algeria: Analysis Of The Modifications And Degradation Of Natural Resources Linked To Desertification

This study aims at analyzing and detecting the evolution and the changes in the lands occupation in the region of M'cif (Msila, Algeria) during 2000-2020. The spatiotemporal survey was conducted using three Landsat satellite images (TM-2000, ETM+-2010, and OLI-2020). A supervised classification technique using the maximum likelihood algorithm has been used for the classification of the use of the lands to generate thematic maps with six main classes. The evaluation of the precision has been applied for each map based on a random method. Moreover, a post-classification technique has been carried out so as to provide a detailed matrix of the changes between 2000 and 2020. Findings confirm that the grassland is subject to very advanced degradation (-130.154 Km2) and that the sand dunes, the agriculturallands, sebkhas, and the urban zone have progressed to + 2.17 Km2, + 16.19 Km2, + 49.66 Km2, +1.21 Km2, respectively. Besides, the study zone is disordered by a rupture of equilibrium between the natural resources and the very high demands of the local people.

Relation entre les conditions édaphiques et le couvert végétal en zone steppique

La zone d'étude située près du périmètre du bassin de Hodna, entre Barika et M'doukal, environ à 3 km
au Nord-est de la ville de M'doukal. Son altitude varie entre 420 et 450 mètres couvre une superficie
de 5000 hectares. Elle est caractérisée par un climat chaud et sec, et appartient à l'étage bioclimatique
aride. La mise en valeur de sol et la végétation de cette zone rend plus que nécessaire l'étude de ces
derniers. Notre travail avait pour objectif de caractériser les paramètres physico-chimiques des sols,
ainsi les caractéristiques floristiques pour mieux comprendre le phénomène de dégradation de ce
milieu.
Ce travail nous a permis de montrer que les sols caractérisés par : une textures sableuses à limoneuses,
présence du calcaire, gypse, sels solubles, basiques, pauvres en matières organiques et une
minéralisation élevée. Les relevés floristiques révèlent uniquement des espèces steppiques adaptées à
ce milieu (Anabasis, Zizyphus, Atriplex, etc.). La plupart de ces plantes sont épineuses et leurs
densités sont généralement faibles. A travers notre étude nous pouvons dire qu'il existe une relation
entre la distribution de la végétation et le sol tuteur, en d'autre terme ces sols portent une végétation
pérenne moins dense souvent clairsemée qui ne pouvait assurer pas une bonne protection aux sols
contre l'érosion éolienne et hydrique. Pour lutter contre la dégradation de cet écosystème fragile il est
important de choisir des espèces adéquates car son fonctionnement écologique dépend fortement sur
de meilleures interactions entre la végétation et le sol.
