Success of marketing know-how transfer of international joint ventures: What does really matter at the beginning?

The effect of political and administrative distance on the choice of market entry mode: Evidence from multinational enterprises in Algeria

This study examines the effect of political and administrative distance on the choice of MNEs market entry mode. Drawing on institutional theory, we hypothesize that both political and administrative distance have a negative effect on the choice of FDI. Using a sample of 87 MNEs listed in the 500 Global Fortunes, we find that administrative distance has a negative effect on the choice of FDI. Our findings also show an insignificant relationship between political distance and the choice of market entry mode. These findings enhance our understanding of MNEs choice between exporting and FDI to enter foreign markets and contribute to the development of institutional theory.

Initial structural conditions, unintended change of ownership structure, and acquisition of international joint ventures: A transaction cost approach

This study aims to demonstrate the effect of initial structural conditions on two main equity-based instability facets, namely change of IJV ownership structure and acquisition. Adopting transaction cost theory (TCT), we examine four key initial structural conditions, namely IJV formation mode, number of partners, ownership structure, and state control. Based on a sample of 147 French-foreign JVs, which were subject to event history analysis, our findings show that partial acquisition mode and unequal ownership structure increase the likelihood of the change of IJV ownership structure and acquisition. In addition, they show that higher number of partners has a positive effect on the change of IJV ownership structure, but insignificant effect on IJV acquisition. Moreover, our findings demonstrate state control has insignificant effect on the change of IJV ownership structure, but a negative effect on IJV acquisition.

Stability of International Joint Ventures: Do Initial Relational Conditions Matter?

This study aims to demonstrate the effect of initial relational conditions on the stability international joint ventures (IJVs). Drawing on transaction cost economics, we examine five key initial relational conditions, namely cross-shareholding between IJV parents, business relatedness between IJV structure and parents, mutual IJV experience, rivalry between IJV partners, and concurrent JV. We test our hypotheses by using data on 147 French-foreign JVs formed overseas between 2009 and 2010. We find that cross-shareholding between IJV parents, business relatedness between IJV structure and parents, and mutual IJV experience positively affect IJV stability, whereas rivalry between IJV partners negatively affects IJV stability. Although findings demonstrate insignificant relationship between the possession of concurrent JV and IJV stability, they highlight that partners that possess concurrent JVs are more likely to change their IJVs’ ownership structure.

Writing up qualitative research

What is the best way to write up the literature review for a paper based on qualitative research? How can you write up your findings while doing justice to a rich dataset? How do you craft your theoretical contribution? How do you balance 'showing' your data and 'telling' your theorisation of it? How can you solve the challenges of writing up a process-based study? This workshop will cover these key questions for qualitative researchers seeking to publish journal articles based on their studies. The workshop will be run in an interactive way, to provide participants the opportunity to share challenges, discuss different approaches, and obtain insights into writing up qualitative research for publication in international business journals.

Using Zoom™ and Globesmart™ to Enhance International Business Online Teaching

Many universities are experimenting with the delivery of online instruction. A key challenge is how to bridge the physical distance between the instructor and class members and how to reduce the feelings of isolation experienced by students. Roberto Garcia has been teaching online MBA students for over 15 years and will demonstrate two technologies which make his online courses highly relevant and engaging. Zoom is a powerful web conferencing tool which allows the real-time delivery of course materials (PPT, Excel files, screen sharing, videos, etc.) while allowing students to connect via video and voice. Globesmart is an online resource that allows students to research business-related cultural information on almost 100 countries. This session will demonstrate Garcia’s approach to delivering online instruction and how to incorporate Zoom and GlobeSmart to deliver content, enhance student interactions, and structure relevant assignments.

Using ForClass™ to Drive Student Engagement and Accountability in International Business Courses

A common teaching problem is how to motivate students to allocate quality preparation time necessary for engaging class discussions. ForClass™ is an LMS integrated app that captures, aggregates, and reports student preparation. In this interactive faculty presentation, Roberto Garcia will demonstrate his implementation of ForClass™ in both small and large international business courses. He will discuss his experience working with this new technology and will share his students’ feedback.

Incorporating Video Clips: An Engaging and Accessible Pedagogical Tool for International Business Teaching

One of the challenges of teaching international business is the coverage of concepts that may seem abstract to students lacking real-world work experience. Incorporating short videos to supplement a traditional class lecture will make the following more accessible to students:
- understanding and managing cultural differences,
- understanding the decision-making process of the key protagonists in a business case by viewing recorded interviews,
- experiencing the key issues in an international business situation or globalization debate,
- viewing simplified explanations of complex cultural, political, economic, or societal trends, etc.
This session will illustrate several ways in which short videos may be used in a traditional lecture to make difficult concepts seem more relevant and engaging to students.

The effect of initial structural conditions on IJV stability: Evidence from French-foreign JVs

The objective of the present study is to demonstrate the effect of initial structural conditions on the
stability international joint ventures (IJVs). We examine four key initial structural conditions, namely
IJV formation mode, number of partners, ownership structure, and state control. Based on a sample
of 147 French-foreign JVs, which were subject to event history analysis, our findings showed that
greenfield IJVs, and equal ownership structure positively affect IJV stability, while higher number of
partners negatively affect IJV stability. Findings demonstrated insignificant relationship between state
control and IJV stability. However, they showed that state-controlled IJVs are less likely to terminate
by acquisition
