Beyond Language: EAP as the Gateway to Academic Excellence

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses are essential for preparing individuals for success in English-medium higher education. This article presents a concise framework for understanding and implementing effective EAP instruction. It emphasizes the goal-directed nature of EAP, rooted in needs analysis to tailor instruction to learners' academic and professional objectives. The framework delineates critical components such as target needs analysis, assessment of learners' present performance, diverse teaching approaches grounded in authentic tasks, and integration into academic programs. Implementation considerations, including pre-sessional and in-sessional course structures, are discussed alongside the ongoing evaluation to ensure efficacy. By addressing learners' communicative needs within academic contexts while leveraging modern pedagogical approaches, EAP serves as a cornerstone for fostering academic success. This framework provides valuable insights for EAP practitioners, guiding curriculum design, instructional strategies, and assessment practices to enhance learners' proficiency and success in English-medium higher education.

التحكيم البشري أم الالي: المصير المحتوم

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements influencing diverse domains, including scientific research, this study explores the emerging trend of utilizing technology, such as software programs and chat bots, for the peer review process of scholarly articles. The research seeks to answer crucial questions regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of machine-guided article reviews compared to the conventional human-guided approach. To systematically address these questions, the study employs a comparative methodology, conducting parallel reviews of scientific articles by both human experts and advanced machine algorithms. Anticipated outcomes aim to shed light on the nuanced differences between human and machine-guided reviews, particularly in terms of potential biases, overall efficiency, and time expended in the revision process. These findings are expected to provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of scientific research processes, offering implications for the future integration of technology in article review workflows.

Effects of pre-editing operations on audiovisual translation using TRADOS: an experimental analysis of Saudi students’ translations

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) is a revolutionary innovation that has had a significant impact not only on the translation industry but also on translation studies. This technology is creating new opportunities for shaping identities and generating new knowledge and perspectives. This led researchers to undeniably and increasingly conduct studies to improve NMT performance. These studies involve assessing the quality of the output, determining the extent to which humans can be involved in the machine-based process, and proposing solutions to redress the deficiencies. In this regard, the paper focuses on the impact of pre-editing (PE) operations on the translation of audiovisual children’s literary texts (subtitles) from English to Arabic using TRADOS. The work seeks to accomplish a number of pre-editing-related research goals in the context of Arabic NMT systems. Initially, it aims to define and clarify the idea of PE and its function in enhancing Arabic NMT systems’ performance. Second, it looks at PE mechanisms and methods and how they might improve the appropriateness and accuracy of Arabic machine translation. Additionally, the study attempts to investigate the value of PE in enhancing the Arabic translation of audiovisual children’s literature. The study also seeks to list the difficulties and restrictions related to PE and suggest viable strategies to get over them. Finally, the paper offers suggestions for further investigation into NMT systems using Arabic and PE. To achieve these goals, the researchers conducted a human evaluation of NMT for two animated movie subtitles and determined the necessary PE operations. The findings revealed that PE has the potential to improve the quality of literary translations and enhance their comprehensibility and acceptability.

Traduction Automatique En Algérie : Etat Des Lieux Des Utilisations

The field of translation has experienced a remarkable technological leap in recent years. All over the world, translators are using software, electronic dictionaries, and turning their computers into real workstations. This paper aims to explore the machine-human translator or machine translation-bio translation relationship in Algeria, by attempting to answer the following questions: are Algerian translators limited to using electronic dictionaries, or do they use the most developed software and CAT tools? And do they carry out pre- (post)editing operations? To answer these questions, we will conduct a questionnaire targeting Algerian translators, official and/or independent, on social networks. The questionnaire provides important information on the types of software/tools used by Algerian machine translators, the degree of integration of technology in their daily work, and the problems they encounter. The results show that respondents are aware of the role technology can play in the field of translation; they go hand in hand with the latest inventions and new usages. These results will help to improve the use of technology, and consequently the quality of translations, in Algeria.

Enhancing Learners Specialized Languages Acquisition through an Effective Cognitive Approach of Translation in a Globalized Age

Language is a means of communication by excellence; we cannot imagine a successful communication without the use of language, whether spoken or written. Though world-wide development we live made of that large universe a small global village, facilitating the intercommunication and inter-culturality between different people to share not only ideas and conceptions but rather sciences and knowledge in all fields. The variety of fields and domains of knowledge led to the emergence of many different specialized languages and raised the need to learning and mastering them in a short period of time, for the warranty of a successful communication between different individuals of different cultural and civilizational backgrounds. Hence, being aware of the importance of specialized languages incites learners to think about the contribution of cognitive approach of translation in specialized languages acquisition and their mastery. For that, how can the cognitive approach of translation help learners in raising their capacities in learning specialized languages? What impact has that cognitive approach on learners’ specialized linguistic performance in a globalized age? How can educators and syllabi designers raise learners’ awareness of the importance of not only learning specialized languages but also how to use the cognitive approach of translation to reach that aim?
Key-words: cognitive approach, translation, specialized languages, global age, communication.
