Effect of prestressed geosynthetic-reinforced embankment over locally weak sabkha zone by numerical approach

In this paper, the effects of prestressing geosynthetic reinforcement on settlement reduction in embankments overlying locally weak zones are investigated through numerical analyses using the PLAXIS finite element code. The selected case study focuses on the reinforcement of a road embankment spanning approximately 11 km across soft sabkha soils in the Chott El Hodna region of Algeria. The construction site presents significant challenges due to the presence of locally weak zones with very low bearing capacity and liquid consistency, making them unsuitable for supporting road embankments without the risk of excessive differential settlements. The study examines the influence of key parameters, including the strength of the underlying weak zones, the magnitude of the 2025prestressing force, and the tensile stiffness of the geosynthetic reinforcement. Numerical results indicate that incorporating prestressed geosynthetics significantly improves the settlement response of the embankment, particularly in areas overlying locally weak zones. This technique enhances load distribution, minimizes localized pressure on weak zones, and mitigates the risk of excessive differential settlements.

CARACTÉRISATION ET TRAITEMENT DES SOLS COLLAPSIBLES DANS LES ZONES ARIDES ET SEMIARIDES À L'AIDE DE DÉCHETS CÉRAMIQUES : UNE ÉTUDE EXPÉRIMENTAL

DYNAMIC MODELING OF SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION FOR SEISMIC PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDING

This study focuses on the effect of soil-structure interaction on the dynamic behavior of structures subjected to seismic movements. A 2D model of a simple minaret, 18.4 meters tall with a width and length of 3.5 meters, was analyzed using the SAP2000 V21 finite element software. Two types of seismic loading were applied: the response spectrum of Algerian seismic regulations (RPA 99 version 2003) for low seismicity (zone: Z1), and accelerograms measured at the Keddara site in Boumerdès, Algeria, in 2003. The soil foundation is classified as type S3 (loose soil), and the analysis included conditions both with and without soil-structure interaction.
The results indicate significant impacts of soil-structure interaction: the inclusion of soil effects led to a 25% reduction in base shear and a 15% increase in the fundamental period of the structure compared to the reference model without soil interaction. Additionally, nodal horizontal displacements at the top of the building increased by 40% when accounting for soil-structure interaction, affecting the overall stability and design considerations. This study underscores the importance of incorporating soil-structure interaction in the design process, as neglecting these effects could lead to underestimating the seismic demand and potentially compromise structural integrity.

Characterization and Treatment of Collapsible Soils in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas Using Ceramic Waste: An Experimental Study

This work explores the characterization and treatment of collapsible soils using ceramic waste and lime. The materials used include sand from Boussaâda, kaolin from Djebel Debbagh, and finely ground ceramic waste. Soil samples, composed of 80% sand and 20% kaolin, are moistened (2%, 4%, 6%), compacted (20, 40, 60 blows), and treated with 4%, 6%, and 8% ceramic waste. Oedometer tests are conducted to evaluate the collapse potential of treated soils. The results show a significant reduction in collapse potential, indicating improved soil stability. This treatment could be beneficial for arid and semi-arid areas.

Limit finite element analysis of active and passive earth pressure under the effect of a strip surcharge

Passive and active earth pressure on a vertical retaining wall are key parameters in geotechnical design. In this numerical study, the finite element method with OptumG2 software adopting the upper limit of limit analysis approach is used to evaluate the active (Pa) and passive (Pp) pressure under the effect of a strip surcharge behind the wall. The influence of surcharge position and intensity, soil friction angle and interface friction are analyzed. The results show an increase in (Pa) and (Pp) with surcharge intensity. Comparison with analytical solutions validates the method. The geometric and mechanical parameters studied have a significant effect on pressure. This study provides a numerical estimate of pressure in the presence of a strip surcharge for the design of retaining walls.

l'Algérie, où le barrage de K’sob, situé au nord-est de M’sila, subit des pertes
annuelles significatives de volume d'eau. Ce phénomène, causé par une érosion
actif, nécessite des opérations de dragage fréquentes, qui, bien que
nécessaires, engendrent des coûts élevés et des impacts environnementaux
Préoccupants.
Cette étude vise à caractériser les sédiments extraits du barrage de K’sob afin
d'explorer leur potentiel de valorisation dans le domaine du génie civil. À
travers des analyses physiques et mécaniques, les sédiments ont été classés.
selon le guide technique GTR (LCPC, SERTA, 2000) en classe A2,
correspondant à des limons argileux peu plastiques. Ces caractéristiques
indiquent que les sédiments peuvent être utilisés efficacement comme
matériaux de remblai ou dans les couches d'assise des infrastructures routières.

Characterization Study of the Earth Bricks Used in the Old Constructions of the Boussaâda Area

This article presents a study on earth bricks (adobe) used in ancient earth constructions in the region of Boussaâda, located in the southeast of northern Algeria. The objective is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties, including compressive and shear strength, as well as the thermal characteristics of these bricks, with the aim of promoting their use on a large scale. The results of the physical and identification analyses showed that the bricks studied are silty sands. The compression tests gave an average compressive strength of 0.2 MPa. The shear tests gave an average cohesion of 172.22 kPa and an average internal friction angle of 63.92°. The average thermal conductivity is 0.7291 W/m.K. The results obtained show that Boussaâda earth bricks have satisfactory physical and mechanical characteristics. The compressive strength is low, but it is sufficient for the construction of one or two storey buildings. Cohesion and internal friction angle are satisfactory for the stability of brick walls. The thermal conductivity is low, which makes Boussaâda earth bricks good thermal insulators. The results obtained reveal that the composition of these adobes can be used to make quality bricks.

Analyse limite de la poussée active des terres sur murs de soutènement rigides avec console sous surcharges statique partiellement repartie

Cette étude se penche sur l'analyse de la poussée active des terres exercée sur des murs de soutènement rigides dotés de consoles en réponse à des surcharges par-tiellement réparties. Étant donné l'utilisation fréquente de ces structures pour sta-biliser des terrains en pente et ériger des murs de soutènement dans des zones ur-baines denses, cette recherche revêt une importance majeure. Les précédentes études ont largement exploré les murs de soutènement, mais peu se sont attardées sur l'interaction complexe entre les surcharges partielles et la poussée active des terres, ce qui motive cette recherche
Nous utilisons la méthode d'analyse limite à l'aide du logiciel Optum G2 V21, ba-sé sur la méthode des éléments finis, pour étudier en détail la poussée active des terres. Notre étude se concentre sur un mur de soutènement rigide d'une hauteur de 10 mètres. Des surcharges uniformément réparties de largeurs variables sont appliquées à différentes distances a du mur. Trois positions distinctes de la con-sole sont examinées, avec une longueur fixe de 1,5 mètre.
Nos résultats préliminaires révèlent une influence significative de la position de la surcharge sur la poussée active des terres. Cette influence diminue lorsque la sur-charge est positionnée à une distance équivalente à la hauteur du mur. En ce qui concerne la position de la console, nos conclusions indiquent qu'une console po-sitionnée à mi-hauteur du mur peut considérablement réduire la valeur de la pous-sée active.
Ces résultats suggèrent que la position de la surcharge et de la console joue un rôle crucial dans le comportement de la poussée active des terres sur les murs de soutènement rigides. Lorsque la surcharge est à une distance appropriée du mur, la console peut effectivement atténuer la poussée active.
Cette recherche contribue à une meilleure compréhension de la manière dont les surcharges partielles et les positions des consoles influencent la poussée active des terres sur les murs de soutènement.

Study of dynamic soil-structure interaction: case of a concrete building under earthquake loading

This study focuses on the soil-structure interaction effect on the dynamic behaviour of structures subjected to seismic motions. A 2D model of a simple minaret with a height of 18.4 meters and a width and length of 3.5 meters was considered using the finite element software SAP2000 V21. Two types of seismic loading were proposed: the response spectrum of the Algerian seismic regulation (RPA 99 version 2003) for low seismicity (zone: Z1), and accelerograms measured in 2003 on the site of Keddara in Boumerdès, Algeria. The soil foundation of a S3 loose soil type, and the foundation is chosen according to two conditions: without soil-structure interaction and with soil-structure interaction. The comparisons were made considering loads (normal force N, shear force T, bending moment M) and the nodal horizontal displacements of each floor as a function of the height of the building. This study concludes that the soil-structure interaction has a significant impact on both the stability and on the economic aspect of structures, and should not be overlooked in their design

Etude de caractérisation des briques de terre utilisées dans les anciennes constructions de la zone de Boussaâda

Unlike other traditional materials; cement, concrete, wood and steel, earth in its natural state can
be used in construction without much energy expenditure. It also has many environmental, social,
cultural and economic advantages. It also has good thermal insulation performance once stabilized
under ideal conditions.
This work, which focuses on the study of earth bricks used in the old earthen constructions of the
Boussaâda area in the south-east of northern Algeria, aims to assess the physical and mechanical
characteristics in compression and shear as well as the thermal characteristics of these bricks, with
a view to popularizing their use on a large scale.
The synthesis of the results of the physical and identification characteristics shows that the adobes
taken are Loamy Sand (SL), according to the LPC classification.
All bricks were tested for compression as well as box shear. The results obtained give a
compressive strength of 0.2 MPa. However, the cohesion and internal friction angle (C, Ф) are
172.22kPa and 63.92° respectively.
The average value of thermal conductivity is 0.7291 W/m.K, which corresponds to the right
thermal insulator.
The results obtained reveal that the composition of these adobes can be used for the manufacture
of quality bricks.

Limit Analyses of the Active Earth Pressure on Rigid Retaining Walls under Strip Loading on Backfills

Recent studies of retaining walls include experimental studies, numerical analysis and analytical models. Although active earth pressure against retaining structures has received much attention, the evaluation of active earth pressure of backfill when loaded by a strip foundation, has been slightly studied. This paper studies the effect of a strip load on the active pressure force and the distribution of the horizontal stresses on a rigid wall, using a finite element limit analysis. The strip loading is located at different distances from the vertical face of the wall. The OptumG2 code is used to analyze the effect of width of strip surcharge (soil-wall), interface friction angle and soil internal friction angle. New interesting results are demonstrated and presented here: the dependency of the active earth pressure coefficient on both position and width of the strip load, in one hand, and the effect of the internal friction angle of the soil, the soil-wall interface, and the position of the strip loading on the failure mechanism, in the other hand.

Probabilistic Analysis of lateral bearing capacity of pile-soil System

The bearing capacity of circular pile has been widely treated considering the soil as a homogeneous material. While the soil properties change randomly, which pushed us to use probabilistic analysis. This study presents an evaluation of the undrained bearing capacity of circular pile under lateral loading, assuming that the cohesion of the soil is random variable. A finite element limit analysis, OptumG2, is used in this study. It is found that the increase of coefficient of variation CovSu, decreases the bearing capacity factor of pile Np, in which the effect of increasing adhesion factor becomes less as CovSu increases.

Analyse numérique d’un modèle physique réduit de pieu sous chargement cyclique

L’article présente une analyse numérique par la méthode des éléments finis FEM d’un modèle physique réduit en chambre d’étalonnage sur un modèle instrumenté de pieu isolé installé dans le sable de fontainebleau, en utilisant le logiciel Plaxis 2D.V8.6. L’études ’intéresse à la réponse de pieu, en particulier la dégradation du contrainte au niveau de l’interface sol-pieu et leur évolution avec l’augmentation d’un chargement cyclique. Les résultats de la simulation numérique du modèle de pieu isolé en chambre d’étalonnage sous chargement cyclique par logicielle Plaxis indique qu’au début de chargement, la contrainte de cisaillement extrême augmente. Cependant, la contrainte de cisaillement diminue avec l’augmentation du nombre cycles (300 cycles).

FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF SOIL-PILE INTERFACE UNDER CYCLIC LOADING

The behavior of circular pile has been widely treated considering the loading as amonotonic loading. In practise, the type of the load is varies according to many factors,which pushed us to use cyclic loading. The purpose of this article is to analyze thebehavior of the soil-pile interface in calibration chamber under cyclic loading. A finiteelement analysis, through Plaxis 2D code, is used to realize this study. This paper dealswith a new evaluation of the pile response, by taking into account the different pile–soiladhesions. It is found at the level of the friction sleeve that, the shear stress increaseswhen the pile–soil adhesions increases. Further, the lateral friction stress is much moreinfluenced by the friction sleeve roughness.

Effet de l’interaction sol-structure sur le comportement d’un remblai renforcé par des armatures métalliques

Le comportement des remblais renforcés est un problème d'interaction sol-structure. Le procédé de renforcement à l’aide d’armatures métalliques, appelé "terre-armée", en est l’exemple type. Ce procédé est utilisé pour augmenter la stabilité de l’ouvrage et réduire les déformations qu’il peut subir sous l’action des charges monotones ou cycliques. Le mécanisme de fonctionnement du matériau "terre-armée" est basé sur l’interaction entre le sol constituant le corps du remblai et les armatures métalliques utilisées pour son renforcement. Pour un sol de caractéristiques géotechniques données, cette interaction est mieux ressentie pour une armature rugueuse que pour une armature lisse de même type.

Influence du chargement cyclique sur la contrainte de cisaillement au niveau de l’interface sol-pieu.

Sand-Steel Interface Behavior Under Cyclic Loading: IEREK Interdisciplinary Series for Sustainable Development

This paper is to investigate the behavior of sand-steel interfaces under cyclic loading. A series of direct shear test results performed on a dune sand in contact with a stainless steel rigid plate, as well as those of a numerical simulation carried out using the Plaxis-2D (version 8.2) software were presented and discussed. The cyclic shear experimental and numerical curves are fairly well concordant. These curves make it possible to conclude that the sand-steel interface cyclic shear modulus and the corresponding damping ratio were influenced by the sand compactness and the steel plate roughness. The results also show that the rough plate is more effective than the smooth one mainly when it is in contact with a dense sand than with loose sand.

Experimental and numerical modeling of the sand–steel interface behavior under monotonic loading

This paper presents and analyzes the experimental and numerical results of a series of direct shear tests performed under monotonic loading on a dune sand presenting two forms of compactness, one loose and the other dense, in contact with a rigid stainless steel plate presenting two forms of roughness, one smooth and the other rough. Experimental direct shear tests were performed using a shear box similar to Casagrande shear box. Calculations were carried out using two elastoplastic behavior models implemented into a finite elements computer program. Experimental and numerical results made it possible to determine the shear strength parameter characteristics of the sand–steel interface, and show a good agreement between the experimental and predicted data. Sand-steel interface behaviour under cyclic loading

This paper is to investigate the behavior of sand-steel interfaces under cyclic loading. A series of direct shear test results performed on a dune sand in contact with a stainless steel rigid plate, as well as those of a numerical simulation carried out using the Plaxis-2D (version 8.2) software were presented and discussed. The cyclic shear experimental and numerical curves are fairly well concordant. These curves make it possible to conclude that the sand-steel interface cyclic shear modulus and the corresponding damping ratio were influenced by the sand compactness and the steel plate roughness. The results also show that the rough plate is more effective than the smooth one mainly when it is in contact with a dense sand than with loose sand.

Experimental and numerical modeling of the sand-steel interface behavior under monotonic loading

This paper presents and analyzes the experimental and numerical results of a series of direct shear tests performed under monotonic loading on a dune sand presenting two forms of compactness, one loose and the other dense, in contact with a rigid stainless steel plate presenting two forms of roughness, one smooth and the other rough. Experimental direct shear tests were performed using a shear box similar to Casagrande shear box. Calculations were carried out using two elastoplastic behavior models implemented into a finite elements computer program. Experimental and numerical results made it possible to determine the shear strength parameter characteristics of the sand–steel interface, and show a good agreement between the experimental and predicted data. In addition, for all considered normal stress levels, the rough interface is more advantageous than the smooth interface, and more true with dense sand than with loose sand of same type.

Modélisation expérimentale et numérique du comportement des interfaces sol-structure

La résolution d'un problème d'intéraction sol-structure (pieux, ouvrages souterraines, terre armée ;...) nécessite la connaissance du comportement des interfaces. Ce travail constitue une contribution dans ce sens. Il est composé de deux parties. Dans la première partie, nous présentons les résultas des essais de cisaillement monotones sol-structure réalisés avec le sable de Bou-saâda à l'aide d'une boite de cisaillement direct modifié. Dans la deuxième partie, le modèle d'interface MODJOIN est validé sur les essais réalisés dans la première partie. Ce modèle comporte les principaux concepts utilisés dans la modélisation des sols (écrouissage, état critique, ….).Les tests de validation ont montré que le modèle décrit bien le comportement de l'interface sous chargement monotone.
