Factors Influencing the Productive and Reproductive Performance of Local Rabbit Strain in Algerian

The objective of the present work was to study the factors influencing productive and reproductive performances of local rabbit strain in Algeria and to determine the influence of the factors (the mode of reproduction, the age of the mothers and the parity) on the number of total born rabbits, rabbits born alive and the number of weaned rabbits in a hutch of breeding of local rabbit strain. A follow-up of breeding was carried out on a total number of 60 rabbits of which 47 reproductive females inseminated naturally (31) or artificially (16) and 08 males for natural mating and 05 for artificial insemination. The herd is composed of rabbits of variable phenotype but of the same strain (different colors of the coat) of local strain.

Statistical models based on morphometric traits for body weight prediction in four dog breeds raised in Algeria

The present study aims to evaluate the morphological differences between genders in four dog breeds: Belgian Shepherd Malinois, Siberian Husky, Algerian Sloughi, and German Shepherd. Additionally, we aim to determine the correlation between live weight and body measurements according to breeds and gender. A total of 292 dogs belonging to these four breeds were used: Belgian Shepherd Malinois (36 females and 44 males), Siberian Husky (31 females and 33 males), Algerian Sloughi (40 females and 40 males), and German Shepherd (32 females and 36 males). Eleven body measurements and live weight were recorded. Multiple linear regression models were proposed using some body measurements to predict the live weight of the dogs. Among the multiple regression models formed, the highest coefficients of determination (R²) were obtained from the models for male German Shepherds using Height at Withers (HW), Head Width (HEW), Muzzle Length (ML), and Chest Girth (CG), with a coefficient of determination (R² = 0.996) and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (CCC = 0.998). This study demonstrates that the live weight of the four dog breeds can be estimated with a high degree of accuracy using certain body measurements and statistical methods, after checking the variance inflation factor to eliminate error rates.

The first morphological study of the Sloughi dog breed in Algeria

The present work aims to study morphometric profile, calculate body indices, and determine mathematical models that will be used for the estimation of adult live weights based on body measurements using multiple regression models in an endangered heritage breed, the Algerian Sloughi dog, raised in three different geographical regions of Algeria. The animal material of the study consisted of 105 Sloughi dogs, which included 30 individuals belonging to the eastern, 35 from the central, and 40 from the western regions of Algeria. Least squares means for height at withers and rump; head length and width; muzzle, ear, neck, body, tail lengths; muzzle, head, chest, waist, thigh, forearm, and wrist circumferences were used as body measurements. Least squares means for indices of massiveness, format, cephalic, body–tail, bone, muzzle–head, withers–rump, head–neck, ear–head length, and ear–head width were calculated using body measurements. Of the multiple regression models, the highest coefficients of determination (R2) were obtained from the models formed from height at withers, height at withers and thigh circumference or height at withers, thigh circumference and chest circumference together (R2 = 0.70, R2 = 0.79 and R2 = 0.86 respectively). This study concluded that live weight of Algerian Sloughi dog breed could be estimated with a high accuracy using body measurements and statistical methods.

Reproduction mode and Strain effects on Rabbit Breeding Performances

This study was carried out to determine the impact of the mode of reproduction and the strain (male and female) of rabbits on some zootechnical and reproduction parameters. For that, monitoring was carried out in 2019 in the region of Setif (North Eastern Algeria) on a semi-intensive breeding of 25 crossbreed rabbits. The statistical analysis showed a very highly significant effect of the mode of reproduction on the number of mating per fertilizing mating (P= 0.0001) with an average of 1 ± 0 in AI (Fertility rate of 80%), while it
was of 1.45 ± 0.51 in natural breeding with a fertility rate of 61%. The weight of the rabbits at weaning was higher in AI than in natural mating (587.25 ± 338.19 g vs. 575.0 ± 375.44 g, respectively). The results relating to the number of total born, born alive, weaned rabbits, the farrowing-mating interval and the farrowing-fertilizing mating interval in natural mode were respectively of (7.4 ± 3.12), (4.55 ± 3.12), (4.55 ± 3.12), (12.65 ± 2.30), (19.15 ± 3.58); and in AI: (6.90 ± 4.12), (5.75 ± 4 .12), (5.75 ± 4.12), (11.65 ± 2.05), (18.99 ± 3.2) (P>0.05). Furthermore, and regarding the strains, data revealed that the females did not have any significant effect on the variables studied. On the contrary, the male had a very highly significant effect on the number of mating per fertilizing mating (p = 0.000), while it had no impact on the other parameters (P>0.05). To conclude, the control and the management of reproduction is the key to success in rabbit breeding, thus the combination of rearing condition and genetic effects is the main tool for making rabbit farming successful.

Abstract
The objective of our study was to evaluate the productive and reproductive performances of the rabbits of Algerian synthetic strain and to determine the influence of the factors (the mode of reproduction, the age of the mothers and the parity) on the number of total born rabbits, born alive and the number of weaned rabbits in a hutch of breeding of rabbits of Algerian synthetic strain. A follow-up of breeding was carried out on a total number of 52 rabbits of which 43 reproductive females inseminated naturally (27) or artificially (16) and 06 males for natural mating and 03 for artificial insemination. The herd is composed of rabbits of variable phenotype but of the same strain (different colors of the coat) of synthetic strain. We found that: The breeding method in rabbits had a non-significant effect on the reproductive performance as well as the productive performance (slaughter weight) of the rabbits. A slight superiority was observed in the lot conducted under artificial insemination (AI) compared to the one conducted under natural control. On the other hand, the reproduction mode had a significant effect on the number of weaned rabbits (P<0.05) with a remarkable superiority for the lot conducted under artificial insemination compared to the one conducted under natural control (LN). The weights of the rabbits at slaughter resulting from natural or artificial insemination are very close for both reproduction modes.

Dehydrated husks and cake of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) processing for broiler feed: Effects on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality

Abstract
Background and Aim: The potential solution is to use agro-industrial by-products as an unconventional source of raw materials for broiler feed. This study aims to determine the effects of substituting prickly pear (FB; Opuntia ficus-indica) husks for corn and FB seed cake for soybean meal on the production performance, slaughter characteristics, and chemical composition of broiler meat.
Materials and Methods: Two hundred day-old chicks of equal sex ratio (1:1) of Big Fast strain, weighing on average 37±2g, were randomly divided into four homogeneous groups of 50 subjects each. Each group was subdivided into 10 packs of five animals, which were banded and numbered. Rations with substitution rates of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of corn and soybean meal by dehydrated husks and FB cake were randomly distributed among the groups.
Results: Average daily gains and body weights on 48 days were improved (p<0.05) in 10% and 20% groups, while the 30% group performed identically to the control. Cold carcass yield was optimal in 10% and 20% groups. The liver weight of the experimental groups decreased significantly (p<0.05), while their gizzard weight increased significantly (+24 points). The meat protein rate evolved proportionally to the substitution rate, whereas the fat rate depreciated by up to −1.08 points for the 30% group compared to the control.
Conclusion: Incorporating FB processing by-products into broiler feed at rates of 10% and 20% improves zootechnical performance, carcass yields, and the chemical composition of the meat.

Morphological characterization of an Algerian Sighthound known as The Sloughi raised in the Wilaya of Tlemcen, Northwest of Algeria.

Abstract
The "Sloughi" is a North African sighthound that the World Canine Organization recognizes as a Moroccan greyhound (breed standard n 188). The aim of this study is to compare the distribution of the body measurements of the Algerian sighthound by sex, sampling zones and body coat color. Sixteen morphometric variables were measured and six indices were estimated (format, massiveness, bone, head/neck, muzzle/head, withers/rump) in 30 adult unrelated animals (21 males and 9 females). The impact of sex on variables and indices was assessed using the t-test, while that of the sampling zones and that of the coat color using ANOVA. The mean values for withers height, height at rump, head
length, muzzle length, ears length, neck length, body length, tail length, muzzle circumference, head circumference,
neck circumference, chest circumference, waist circumference, thigh circumference, forearm circumference, wrist circumference were 71.85, 70.61, 25.24, 10.83, 13.16, 21.23, 68.44, 43.55, 21.50, 33.63, 41.27, 73.35, 48.73, 34.48, 14.67 and 10.81 cm, respectively. The results showed that there was no sexual dimorphism according to the phenotypic traits, the difference between the animals was only due to their body measurements. Males had more developed measurable traits than females, and the mean of Shannon’s diversity index for all variables was 0.99363.

Agro-industrial byproducts in rabbit food: Case of the complex of detoxified apricot kernel cake and dehydrated tomato pulp

Background and Aim: The use of agro-industrial byproducts as an unconventional source of raw materials for monogastric feed is one possible solution. This study aimed to determine the effects of incorporating detoxified apricot kernel meal (DAKM) as a substitute for soybean meal and dehydrated tomato pulp (DTP) as a substitute for alfalfa hay on the local rabbit fattening.
Materials and Methods: A total of 120 white strain rabbits, weaned at 33 days, were randomly assigned to four groups of 30. The rabbits in each group were ringed, placed in cages at 6 rabbits/cage, and fed according to DAKM and DTP incorporation rates (0%, 30%, 40%, and 60%).
Results: The weights at 77 days were improved (p<0.05) with unchanged mean daily intakes. The vast majority of slaughter parameters and carcass characteristics improved. The chemical composition of the meat constituents improved significantly, with a 60% increase in the protein content of the batch (26.55% vs. 28.53%), 38% reduction in the total feed cost, and 40 DA saved for each kilogram of feed consumed per rabbit. The relative economic efficiency improved in proportion to the substitution rates of soybean meal by DAKM and alfalfa hay by DTP.
Conclusion: Substituting DAKM and DTP, as byproducts of agro-industrial processing, for up to 60% induced satisfactory results in rabbit fattening. Therefore, it would be more insightful to increase the incorporation rates to determine the optimal threshold.

Dehydrated tomato pulp in rabbit feed: effects of incorporation rate on growth performance, carcass yield, meat quality and economic efficiency

ABSTRACT. The economic value of animal production depends on the price of raw materials used in feed formulas and the level of incorporation of agroindustrial by-products of low-added value. The study aimed to determine the effects of incorporating dehydrated tomato pulp (DTP) at rates of 30, 40 and 60% instead of dehydrated alfalfa in the diet of fattening rabbits on growth and slaughter performances, meat quality and economic efficiency. One hundred and twenty local rabbits, called the ‘white population,’ weaned at 33 day of age, were randomly divided into 4 groups of 30 animals, identified and distributed in cages, 6 rabbits/cage, i.e. 5 replicates per group. There were no statistically significant differences among groups concerning growth performance for the whole study period (days 33–77). The liver weight of the 60% DTP group was positively influenced (on average +20 g) in comparison to the control, while the perirenal fat weight took values inversely proportional to the DTP incorporation rate for the experimental groups. The middle part (loin) was heavier in 30% DTP group (on average +68 g) in comparison to the control group. The partial substitution of dehydrated alfalfa by DTP improved the economic efficiency of the 60% DTP group (on average +0.38%). So, DTP might remain an alternative to the substitution of alfalfa at rates of 60% without negative effects on the growth performance, slaughter performance, carcasses characteristics and at the same time it may assure cost-effectiveness.

Phenotypic and morphometric characterization of the various strains of quail raised in Algeria

Abstract
Since the absence of studies dealing with the genetic biodiversity and phenotypical description of different breeds of quails in Algeria, we have initialized this work in order to investigate and to contribute in a characterization of the quails in some states. A total of 206 adult quails, distributed in 09 regions in Algeria from which 11 morphometric measurements and 11 phenotypic characters were selected for this study. The measurements Lie (wing length), Lq (tail length), Lc (neck length), Dg (big finger), Dm (medium finger), Dp (small finger), Lt (total length), Lts (tarsus length), Ab (abdomen), Lgp (chest width), Lbe (beak length), W (weight). A multiple correspondence factorial analysis was performed on the phenotypic characteristics, and reveals two main component that constitute 19.61% and 13.41% of inertia, percentages
respectively related to the length of wing, of the tail, of neck, big finger, middle finger, little finger, the total length of abdomen, of the tarsal width, width of the chest, the length of the beak and weight. This analysis has made it possible to establish remarkable phenotypic differences which have implications to be taken into consideration in the characterization and conservation program of the species. We have found that the sex has no effect on the measurements parameters, except the weight. However, the effect pf the strain may have some differences on the morphometric measurements studied. Finally, it should be noted that the present work of morphometric characterization of high quail strains in Algeria deserves to be continued and developed in the future, based on the determination of zootechnical performances (productive and reproductive) of these strains, and also the preservation of this genetic heritage deemed important.
Key words: quail, morphometric measurements, phenotypic, strains, Algeria.

Effects of Incorporating Cull Dates and Apricot Kernel Cake on Fattening Performances and Carcass Characteristics of Local Rabbits

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to determine the effects of incorporating the complex apricot kernel
cake and cull dates on the fattening performances of a “white population” breed of rabbits. In
total, 288 young rabbits of both sexes (1:1) aged 35 days were divided into 4 equal groups of
72 individuals, with 6 rabbits per cage, according to the rage of replacing corn by cull dates
and soya cake by apricot kernel cake (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%). The change in weight
between day 35 and day 77 was not significantly different between the different rates of
substitution. The average daily gain (ADG (35 to 77 d)) displayed a significant difference for
20% and 30% groups (+6%), an increase in meat proteins for the 10% group (+8.8%) and
30% group (+5.6 %) and a reduction in lipids for the 20% group (-19%). The financial gain
was €17.3 per hundredweight of food produced for the incorporation of 30% of the complex
of dates rebus and apricot kernel meal in substitution for the maize complex and soybean
meal

Effects of incorporating agro-industrial by-products into diet of New Zealand rabbits: Case of rebus of date and apricot kernel mea

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of incorporating the by-products complex of date and apricot on the fattening performance of the New Zealand breed of rabbits, to reduce the economic costs of the food formula.

Materials and Methods: A total of 288 young New Zealand rabbits aged 35 days were divided into four equal groups each containing 72 animals and into sub-groups of 6 rabbits per cage, depending on the rate of substitution of corn by date rebus and of soybean meal by apricot kernel meal (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%).

Results: The change in weight from day 35 to 77 and the average daily gain are not significantly different, regardless of the diet. The pH and water content are proportional to the substitution rates (6.4-6.6% and 66.5-68.8%). Meat protein levels increased significantly, in particular for the 10% and 30% groups (+8.1% and 6%) while the fat and mineral content levels decreased significantly, in particular for the 30% group displaying -16% and -17%, respectively. Incorporation of dates and apricot kernel meal into the ration of rabbits reduces the cost of the kilogram of food produced of -9%, with an opportunity cost of 165 Algerian dinars (DZD).

Conclusion: The date rebus/apricot kernel meal complex can be used as an alternative to the corn/soybean meal complex at substitution rates of up to 30% without adverse effects on growth rates, feed contribution, or slaughter yield. It improves the chemical composition of the meat and reduces the cost price of the quintal of feed produced.
