Study of morphometric and reproductive parameters of equine breeds raised in Algeria

This study was conducted on the purebred Arabian horse, Arab-Barb and Barb, present in the
National Stud of Chaouchaoua, Wilaya of Tiaret. The objective of this work is to identify the
morphometric characteristics of the 20 characters (HG) Height at withers, (HC) Croup height,
Substernal height (HSS) Substernal void (VSS) , Head Languor (LTE), Neck languor (LE),
Anterior canal languor (ACL) Posterior canal languor (LCP), Languor of the pastor (LP),
Total languor (TL), Eye to eye distance (DY), Forearm tour (FT), Tower of Geniuses (TG),
Anterior canal tour (TCA), Neck circumference (NC), Chest circumference (CC), Chest width
(CF), Pasturent tour (TPA), on 43 purebred Arabian Barb and Arab Barb horses aged 3 years
and over. Thus to study the following reproductive parameters (gestation duration), (foaling-
return to heat interval) (foaling-Gestation interval) concerns data from three years (2020, 2021
and 2022).
This study showed significant values of quantitative and qualitative characters for individuals
of both sexes in the sample studied. The results obtained confirm the sexual dimorphism
already known in Equines, and also confirm the results already obtained by other researchers.

Pastoral Assessment of Steppe Rangelands in the Northwestern Region of M'sila (Algeria)

In Algeria, steppe rangelands are experiencing significant degradation due to human and livestock pressures. This is evidenced by the decline in plant species with pastoral value, which undermines the productivity of pastoral livestock systems and, consequently, reduces the incomes of rural populations. A study was conducted at seven stations in the northwest of the region of M'sila. This work was undertaken as part of an analysis of floristic richness and an evaluation of pastoral resources in these steppe rangelands during the spring season. The floristic study identified 40 species belonging to 16 families, including 13 perennials and 27 ephemeral species. The managed rangeland was found to be the richest in species diversity compared to other rangelands classified as open.
The evaluation of pastoral resources was conducted using a method based on specific indices and the contribution of each species. The study yielded the following results: Pastoral productivity was higher in the set-aside rangeland compared to the open rangelands at the various stations studied. The animal carrying capacity was approximately 2.28 livestock units (LU) per hectare per season on the managed rangeland. The open rangelands showed clear signs of overexploitation and degradation of these steppe ecosystems.

Study of the factors influencing the success of the reproduction of turtle doves (Streptopelia turtur) in a fruit tree-type agrosystem (El Hodna, Algeria)

The objective of the study is to find and provide answers on the ecology of the reproduction of turtle doves in an artificial agricultural habitat, composed of two orchards, in particular apricot and olive trees. A total of 203 active dove nests were monitored in these artificial agrosystems.
The density of the nests was higher in the apricot orchards 02,61 nest/ha and 02 nest/ha for the olive tree. Breeding success was higher in apricot orchards than in olive trees. The mean clutch size in the two orchards was 01,93±0,01 eggs per nest. Apricot habitat was 1,90±0,03 and olive was 1,96±0,01. Nest abandonment (69,2%, n=45) and predation (16,9%, n=11) were the main causes of failed incubation stages. The breeding success of nests in the two orchards was 62,89%, for apricot and olive were 65,36% and 59,66% respectively. Desertion was the main cause of nest failure with a value of 69,2%, followed by predation with a frequency of 16,9%. Apricot orchards are the preferred breeding habitat of the dove in this region. In both orchards, nest position variables were not a significant predictor of nesting success.
